Definition<\/span> and Pathologies of Calcific Nodules<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Presenting as an eruptive calcium protrusion into the lumen, calcified nodules:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Occur at sites of increased torsional stress<\/span>2<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/li>\n
  • Have a higher prevalence of necrotic core calcium compared to adjacent regions<\/span>3<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/li>\n
  • Are flanked proximally and distally by hard, collagen-rich calcium<\/span>4<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/li>\n
  • Are believed to result from fragmentation of plates or sheets of calcium<\/span>5<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Within calcified nodules, there are two histological types:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Eruptive nodular:<\/span><\/b> Small dense fragments or nodules of calcium with a fibrous cap disruption and luminal thrombus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Non-eruptive nodular:<\/span><\/b> Small dense fragments or nodules of calcium with a smooth, intact fibrous cap<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
