Nick West, M.D.
Associate Chief Medical Officer
Dr. West joined Shockwave Medical in September, 2023. Prior to Shockwave, he was Chief Medical Officer and Divisional Vice President of Global Medical Affairs for Abbott’s Vascular Division from 2019 to 2023. Before this, he was a practicing interventional cardiologist at the Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, the United Kingdom’s largest specialist cardiothoracic center, as well as a founding member and Chief Medical Officer of the Cambridge-based biotech startup, PlaqueTec Ltd.
Dr. West graduated in medicine from Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge and St. Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London, and trained in interventional cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand.
He currently sits on the Innovation Council of the UCLA School of Biodesign and chaired the AHA’s Bay Area Research Roundtable in 2023. He has published extensively on topics including vascular biology, coronary physiology/microvascular function, intracoronary imaging/vulnerable plaque detection with both IVUS and OCT, and bioresorbable scaffold technology.
